Doxy PEP

Doxy PEP refers to "doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis". It’s a preventive approach where doxycycline, an antibiotic, is taken after potential exposure to certain bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to reduce the risk of infection.

How We Treat?

  • Common Use: It’s primarily studied for preventing chlamydia, syphilis, and sometimes gonorrhea in high-risk individuals.

  • Timing: Usually taken within 72 hours after sex with someone whose STI status is unknown or positive.

  • Dosage: Often a single 200 mg dose or 100 mg daily for 2 days, depending on the protocol.

  • Effectiveness: Studies show it can significantly lower the risk of some bacterial STIs, but it does not prevent HIV or other viral infections.

  • Considerations: Not recommended for people with allergy to tetracyclines, pregnant people, or those with certain liver problems. Overuse can lead to antibiotic resistance.

It’s different from PrEP, which is for HIV prevention; Doxy PEP is for bacterial STIs.
