PrEP
PrEP is a highly effective HIV prevention method for HIV-negative individuals at risk of exposure. It involves taking prescribed medication (pills or an injection*) that prevents the virus from taking hold in the body.
*We only offer pill form
How Effective is PrEP?
-
Up to 99% effective at preventing HIV from sex when taken daily.
-
Effectiveness increases the more consistently it’s taken.
-
PrEP does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), so using condoms is still recommended.
Medications for PrEP (Pill Form)
Several manufacturers produce this generic version, and it’s FDA-approved as equivalent to Truvada. It’s used both for HIV treatment (in combination with other medicines) and for PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) to prevent HIV in people at risk. Most insurance covers the generic version of this medication, and GoodRx is the way to go for affordability for those who are uninsured. ___ Emtricitabine 200 mg Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) 300 mg
DESCOVY® is also a fixed-dose combination tablet, but its formulation is slightly different from Truvada®. Unlike Truvada®, there is no FDA-approved generic for DESCOVY® yet in the U.S. Only the branded version from Gilead Sciences is available. Very few insurance covers this medication, usually depending on the State. ____ Emtricitabine 200 mg/ Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) 25 mg
